Did you think I would naturally know which colors to pull? Nope. I study the photograph, pull a series of colors that I think might work; or if I've done something similar in the past, refer back to my old swatch. On a small piece of the same surface I will eventually use for my painting, I experiment with colors and simple shapes. Practice, practice. These studies are similar to stretching before a long run.
