A Word About Process

When I work on my larger pieces, taking as many as 100 hours to complete, I need something more than an end goal, I need a story. So in choosing my subject, I look for something beyond a graphically interesting reference photo. What is the story? What interests me in the photo? What is it about? Is the color in the background triggering a memory or a feeling? Is the pattern of light placing me somewhere? Is there a hidden message? I don’t always know what or why until I’m in it. And once I start and my pencil zig-zags across the substrate, with the first chapter of the audio book turning to the next and the next, subliminal strands weave themselves in. I don’t always know where the technique ends and the art begins. It’s like I’m tapped into some kind of energy or earth force. I know that sounds artsy-fartsy. Sorry, there is no other way to describe it. That’s the process.

In The Gift there were many things. I liked the light and the “Hidden Picture” quality of the bonus deer. Also, there was my personal story happening as I hiked in the woods with my dog and my camera. Hopefully you will have your own reaction based on your own experiences that will make this scene work for you. The original is available for sale at Row House Gallery in Milford OH. Fine art Giclees available for sale on my ETSY site. Go to SHOP.
